Planting lots of summer vegetables, plans for the house & how it's affecting my gardening!
This week I planted out a whole heap of summer vegetables that I bought from Quickcrop and this is something I've done before, when time and space is tight for sowing seeds. Having pre-grown vegetable seedlings like the ones I got delivered are so handy!

This week I tried out something different when filming my video and I'd love to know what you think! I planted out plants that have been sitting in their pots for far too long on the back wall and both borders and had the chats while doing it and it felt like I was chatting to someone beside me! I also give a little summer update of my sister's new build garden which is full of colour! What hav...

Then I finally got to plant some of my vegetables and had to do it in stages as I was unwell and the energy levels were pretty low. I'm excited to harvest them later in the ...

Garden fails so far!

This year has been such a challenge for those of us who love to garden. Lots of us are having problems with slow seed germination, slow plant growth and a lot is to do with the really wet and cold weather we've been having so far this year. In Ireland, we've had a few sunny days and in my chats at the end of the video, what I was trying to explain was that for a lot of us, because the weather h...

Love your chats and project updates. The weather here in Portland Oregon, USA has been a mixture of hot, humid, cloudy and sunny. Enjoying our flower garden, lots of bed cleaning out and spreading mulch. Sure makes a difference, thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Karen! Thanks for the video! I have been having terrible luck with slugs and snails this year eating my veggies as well. I've found that throwing crushed egg shells around will deter them as the shells are very uncomfortable for them to go over. Hope this helps! xx
Karen I have you and Catherine to blame for my gardening addiction! Oh my word...I have now got 20 40 x 40 raised beds, 2 veg beds...tomatoes, rutabaga, lettuce carrots, radishes, green beans...the list goes on! I have 14 roses and various and sundry other beautiful plantings. I'm having so much fun and take my husband for tours of the garden if something changes or blooms. I have an abundance of bees and can hear them happily buzzing while out deadheading the plants. My sweet peas are doing well...they were one of my grandmother's favorite flowers. I look forward to continuing the addiction the pair of you started!! BTW I read this week that putting coffee grounds your plants could keep slugs away because they don't like the smell or texture of the grounds! Heat up that coffee pot! Thank you for the work you put into your videos...I look forward to Sunday mornings!
Your video’s are always so gorgeous x how cute is the bird having a sun bath behind you x
I bought two archs a few months ago from aldi think €40 each, they are gorgeous, not flimsy, but not extra extra strong. I did put a good multi-purpose waterproof black ( so you don't see it ) paint on the joints and nuts. Just have to see how long they last. What veg am I growing 😮. Lettuce also iceberg and others beetroot, corn, white brown and red onions green beans two types garlic and carrots I have seen on a lot of alotment utube channels not to grow carrots in trys they don't transplant but mine have my first year growing carrots I even thined them out and planted them elsewhere so far they have rooted in again. Tomatoes which are doing fantastic even got a crop from them strawberries red current black current blueberries and peppers , I've a small garden lot smaller than yours, a big shed takes up about a qurter no grass so I've raised beds and pots. Lots of pots of flowers hanging baskets and wall planters. Front garden yes have grass growing flowers nothing flowering yet fecking weather 😢 in my sons garden new plot I've corn Lettuce broccoli beans in two beds . On his little patio I've pots of flowers strawberries and tomatoes and put a few window boxes. His garden is a small patio \ courtyard area go up steps and a long green garden that was very very overgrown his neighbours were delighted when I started to cut back all the overgrown brambles growing between the gardens. It's going to take time to get the growing set up I'm hoping by next year I'll be set.
I definitely ware gloves. II’m in Austin and we have fire ants here!
I think you're wise to delay planting until your construction is complete. It could be a chance to put pen to paper and plan how you'd like your garden to look with the new home extension. I hope you do eventually get your lovely greenhouse. I've wanted one for years too.
No gloves, love feeling the soil.
You were missed last week, we love visiting with you! Every time you mention Edward Scissor Hands, I have to chuckle. Love the reference. I try to use gloves, but most of the time don’t, because I can’t feel what I’m doing. Your addition to your house is a big undertaking but will be worth it. I think it’s a great idea to see if you can get the foundation poured for a future greenhouse at the same time as the extension. Hope all goes well for you.
Karen you are like the Maeve Binchy of gardening. I am not in Ireland at the moment and when I watch your videos it reminds me of home. Your authenticity is what makes you different to others. I have started looking after our garden after my husband died in Jan who was the caretaker. It is so therapeutic being outside. Love you chatting thanks for sharing x
I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband. I’m sure he’d be delighted that you’re looking after the garden for him ❤️❤️❤️ And thank you for that beautiful compliment 🥰🥰🥰
Hi Karen, Thanks for the gardening motivation.😊❤❤
Happy to help!
Happy Sunday Karen. Your garden is really looking lovely. The birds and bees must be in heaven😍 you did make me chuckle when you said you'll be collecting seeds so you won't be buying any next year 😂 we'll see 🤔 hope you have a lovely rest of the day and week!!
I know, right? I figure maybe if I say it out loud enough, I might actually not buy seeds 😂😂😂
It been ridiculously hot here where I live and having to soak my trees and gardens every morning. I enjoy a fellow gardener like you and others I watch helps through rough hot months ❤😊
I hope the heat eases off for you soon!!
@@Lovelygirliebits Sadly it will be in the 100s for the next few days
You inspired me again 🌿 I stopped the video halfway through went outside and planted 2 hydrangea from pots into the ground 🌼 potted on 18 begonias 🌺🏵️🌺 and gave a dozen lavender plants a top up with compost 🪻🪻🪻 am back now with a cold drink 🍹to finish watching 🌿🌿🌿 ps I'm a no gloves gardener 😀 I've got them but just get stuck in usually - my nails are always full of muck 🥴🙄😆
No gloves for me! Have to feel the earth in my hands.
Fun video ❤
Thanks for watching 🥰
Well, now I've watched you I'm going out in the garden to water all my pots as we've had no rain this week and some of the plants are looking a bit sad. I'm quite lucky as I never have many weeds at all but you always seem to have so many. I had an extension built a few years ago now and my son came and dug out a load of shrubs and transplanted them in his garden so they didn't go to waste. Lucky the builders didn't trash the garden too much but fortunately I have a large paved area to the side of the house and that got messed up instead.
I can see myself having to move lots of plants in pots! I hope the watering helps your plants today!
@@Lovelygirliebits Good luck with all your potting, just come in all deadheaded, swept up and watered . Looking better already
Lovely video Thoroughly enjoyed 💕 Xx
Thank you so much for watching!
I drove metal stakes into the sides of the arch and then attached the arch to the stakes using cable ties this gave the arch much more support and have had them up for at least 5 years now it’s worth a go 😊😊😊
So with the arch that broke, it got rusty around the joints and snapped just above them, and I can see the same thing starting to happen with the second arch 😂🙈
@@Lovelygirliebits bummer 🤣😆
I love that you are just chatting away to us while you are working. Makes me feel like I'm just sitting there watching while you are working. I love the thought processes too...keep doing that. Hope you have a fabulous week.
Ah I’m so glad you’re enjoying the chats!! Thanks for watching!
Morning you have absolutely just brightened up my day lovely lady , I’m very very like yourself with the garden ,but I like my muddled mess look I’m not into the show or perfect look ,I stick things in here there and everywhere so it’s a jumble look ,good luck with the alterations we had that mess for a very very long time but it’s lovely in the end. Thanks for making this old boot very happy 🤗🤗🤗😘🍷🍷a bit early for wine but defo later have to hydrate alllll my wrinkles ,,xx
I love that you also love the muddled messy vibes in the garden! The perfect look is boring to me 😂
Hi beautiful video ❤ luv u 💓 ❤
Thank you so much!!
Hi good to catch up with you. Your garden is looking good. I'm just harvesting my first courgettes of the season yummy yummy. I have a mass of roses at the moment. This month you can take cuttings of your roses which I'm going to try. Found a utube man who shows you how to do the cuttings. Catch you next time 😊😊😊 keep sowing
Oh I must try rose cuttings again! The ones I did before didn’t take, but I want to try again this year. What’s the name of the channel who showed how to do cuttings?
I have two metal arches but they are in one piece and they don't rust .
I think that’s exactly what I need!
The chats are my favourite things !
Ah I’m glad you enjoy them!
I was over in dublin recently. First trip to Ireland. I felt so at home especially loved Dublin area. One thing I noticed as we were driving round is how well maintained the majority of front gardens are. They were a joy to see. Unfortunately not so many people here in uk take pride in their gardens at least not where I live. One of my neighbours did comment on how nice my front garden looked yesterday and it made my day. She said I’ve encouraged her to buy some plants. She could not have given me a better compliment. X
I have to admit, my front garden is nothing special! But I think when the back is more established, I’ll start tackling that one (but would be too embarrassed to film outside 😂😂😂)
Lovely to get a compliment like that, it’s both encouraging for you and her and hopefully it will spread,
Also, I love that you’ve unintentionally inspired someone and that will be carried on through her friends and family too, I’m sure 🥰❤️ Keep up the good work!
Dublin is genuinely my favourite place in the world. It brings me peace the minute my feet hit the ground there
@@mariannetuite7411 what a lovely thing to say! I hope you get as much time there as is possible. My Father was a Dubliner, a kind and gentle man, a certain wit too, that only belongs to the Dubs. Unfortunately they lost the match today, Galway sent them flying, but the Dubs always come back to fight/play another day
great progress🙂
Thank you 🥰
Such pretty roses 🌸🌸🌸 Edward Scissor hands 😆
She’s ruthless!! Nothing is safe 😂
Thank you 😊. The information is so great and you're so relatable. Ibwish you were my neighbor 😄🌷💐
What is the gold compact that comes with the kit.
Chats please! I feel more involved in the video, like I'm right there with you and you're talking to me.
Loved the chats, Karen, rather than the music if there's a choice 😊 Lovely to see your sister's garden as well as yours.
I just love your videos Karen. I also love that that there seems to be a lot of us alike… , buying plants, and them leaving them in their pots, and then it’s a ‘oh heck’🤣🤣🙈
Number 2
love the chats
great vlog can you tell me what the pink rose is called op the purple one next to the chair love dogs but that one needs to go on a very long walk 🤯 your sisters garden looks lovely
I cannot get to garden this year so far, it has been raining non stop, today is actually storming! This year is doomed for gardening. Between snails and slugs it is a failing battle. Luckily your videos always brighten my day.
Love the chats over music. With constant barking I understand voice overs or music. Your gardens. Coming along💚
I love the chats. My garden seems behind, and I have plants to put into the ground just like you. So I'm clearly in good company 😅. Love watching the bees 🐝 getting busy on all the flowers. Thanks for a fab video xx
Your Wisteria will grow, they’re notorious for slow growing we have one which is about 8ft high x 6ft across and it took 5 years before we had any flowers it’s on a south facing garage wall. Wish I could send you a photo of it as it’s magnificent when it’s in bloom. I prefer the chat to the plinky plonk music 😊🌸🤗
I like your chats ... I am feeling better about my weeds and doing my best each day (or when it's not raining). I think your garden looks lush and healthy.
‘Focus Karen’ 🤣😂🤣😂 - this is me being distracted every 10 secs 😆. Gorgeous garden update albeit a bit weird watching you doing an impression of me 😆😆😆. Loving the chats and your lovely garden keep ‘em coming ❤
Hi Karen! Thanks so much for the video! For the BBQ, something that we love to put on the grill are onions-like the Vidalia or sweet variety-put them in some tin foil with a bit of butter or oil, wrap them up and throw them on like a potato. Nothing like it-reminds me of the fair! I am from the South in the US and we also love to put chicken quarters on and baste them with a mixture of cider vinegar, pepper flakes and ketchup, which is delicious as well but a bit spicy depending on how much pepper flakes you throw into the vinegar sauce. I also had a question for you-how do you deal with slugs/snails in the garden munching on all of your veggies? I live in the French Alps and this year especially, with the amount of rain we’ve been having, there are so many and they’ve eaten so much of my garden.🪴
Bbq ideas. - Grilled pineapple - Marinade kebobs of red peppers, zucchini and mushrooms - bbq pizza - asparagus with garlic and cheese - grilled fish and prawns with chili lime sauce or lemmon pepper
Our tomatoes really love our used coffee grounds and our roses loved a cooled banana peel tea (just boil a cup of chopped peels for a few mins).
Be careful with the raspberries. They can be invasive. A friend planted some in a border and the plants took over. She had to spend a lot of time and hard work to remove them. I love listening to your chats and prefer the chats over music. Always enjoy your videos. We are entering into a big heat wave here in eastern US. Have to go out early in mornings to water. Not a fan of hot weather!
Like the chats. 👍 If a plant has dried out like your rose dunk it in a bucket of water for couple of hrs before you plant. - Frances
Hello you have beautiful plants. I think you need a male and female raspberry plants, I could never get mine to bear fruit and was told this, I no longer have them. Take care, I like the chit chat along the way. 😊
I prefer just listening to you talk, it’s very soothing! With the music I often find it’s a bit much. I’m also growing a raspberry plant for the first time - it’s a dwarf variety and I’m leaving it in a largeish pot ❤
